CRP (C-Reactive Protein)
CRP is the sole biomarker measured in this test. It is an acute-phase protein produced by the liver in response to cytokines, especially interleukin-6 (IL-6), which are released during inflammation or infection. Under normal conditions, CRP levels are very low. However, during an inflammatory process, CRP can increase rapidly — often within six hours — and may rise to levels hundreds of times higher than normal. Elevated CRP is non-specific, meaning it does not point to a particular condition, but it is highly useful as an early warning signal. For example, a sharp rise in CRP may support a diagnosis of bacterial infection, while a gradual increase might suggest an ongoing autoimmune flare-up.
