Bilirubin Levels
Bilirubin Levels measure both total and, in some cases, direct (conjugated) and indirect (unconjugated) bilirubin in the blood. High bilirubin can be a sign of liver dysfunction, bile duct obstruction, or excessive red blood cell breakdown (haemolysis). Elevated levels often result in jaundice, where the skin and eyes appear yellowish.

Albumin
Albumin is the main protein produced by the liver. It helps maintain fluid balance and transport hormones, vitamins, and drugs. Low albumin levels may indicate chronic liver disease, malnutrition, or kidney dysfunction, and reflect the liver’s synthetic capacity.

Alanine Transferase (ALT)
Alanine Transferase is a liver enzyme released when liver cells are damaged. It is one of the most specific markers for liver inflammation or hepatocellular injury, particularly in conditions like viral hepatitis, fatty liver disease, or drug-induced liver injury.

Gamma-Glutamyltransferase (GGT)
Gamma-Glutamyltransferase is an enzyme involved in bile production and liver detoxification. Elevated GGT may indicate bile duct obstruction, alcohol-related liver damage, or cholestasis (bile flow disruption). When combined with ALP, it helps pinpoint the cause of liver enzyme abnormalities.

Total Protein
Total Protein measures the overall levels of protein in the blood, including albumin and globulin. Abnormal levels may reflect liver disease, inflammation, or nutritional imbalance. The total protein value helps assess the liver’s ability to synthesise essential proteins.

Globulin
Globulin includes a group of proteins involved in immune function and transport of substances. Altered globulin levels can occur in chronic liver conditions, autoimmune diseases, or infections. A shift in the albumin-to-globulin ratio may indicate liver dysfunction or chronic inflammation.

Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP)
Alkaline Phosphatase is an enzyme found in the liver, bile ducts, and bones. High ALP levels are often associated with bile duct blockages, gallstones, or liver conditions such as cholestasis. When elevated alongside GGT, it often confirms a biliary origin.

Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST)
Aspartate Aminotransferase is another enzyme released with liver cell damage. While not as specific to the liver as ALT, elevated AST is seen in hepatitis, alcoholic liver disease, and muscle injury. The ratio of AST to ALT can help differentiate between types of liver disease.
